Today at piano lessons I learned which piece I would be playing for my spring recital. It is called “Pachelbel’s Canon.” It is very interesting. My mom says it was played at her wedding!! I really like the tune, but I have LOTS to practice.
My Sisters’ New Looks

Today we went to the hairdresser’s. Originally it was just a trim for all of us (me and my sisters) but this time, Maggie and Susanna had bigger plans. Susanna wanted hers cut to her shoulders and she wanted bangs (her hair was about 2 or 3 inches below her shoulders originally) and Maggie wanted bangs. They both look very different. Susanna looks just like me when I was 4 years old, according to home videos I’ve watched and photos I’ve looked at. Maggie-oh well, I can’t relate to anyone that she looks like. For those of you who visit us frequently, you’ll just have to see. Lucy and I got a trim. I am going to get my hair layered next appointment. I can’t wait!
Bake Sale

I have already mentioned my friend Sarah’s mom, I believe, in “Scottish Dancing Competition”. Well, she is also my 4th grade teacher (along with 3rd and 5th graders.) Every year around St. Patrick’s Day or Valentine’s Day we have a bake sale. It is to help us learn percents. It is fun. This year I did something I have always wanted to do. I became a cashier! To become a cashier, you have to get every problem on a cashier’s test right. It is about how to find percents. We make percentage coupons every year. That is how we learn percents. We put the coupons on posters on the walls of the school. Everything is $0.25. The coupons only go up to 20% off. You can only use one coupon per purchase. Thought you weren’t gonna see any math on this blog? Well, think again. So, one of my customers today got three things. They had a 15% off coupon. So to figure out what they owed, I did the problem .75 x .15. The answer? .1125. Round it to the nearest cent and they get $0.11 off. But they gave me a dollar. So I gave them $0.36 in change.
We had a raffle this year, too. It was for jewelry my friend and I made. One of my other friends got them. They were earrings and a necklace.
We made $49.70 this year. We are going to use it for a school lunch. This bake sale was fun! I hope we can do another one this year. If we do, I can’t wait!
Church Lunch

On the third Sunday of each month, our church serves lunch. They are hosted by different ministries in the church. The food is different every time. Last time it was the Japanese ministry. We had Japanese food.It was good, but not so good as today’s. Today’s was hosted by the Men’s Ministry. My dad helped serve. It was called “Beef and (Root) Beer.” It was really good. It was funny to see my dad in a bow tie!! (I’ve never seen him in one before.) I can’t wait for our next lunch.

Yesterday, my family, my cousins and their family, and my uncle, his girlfriend, and her mom and grandmom. It was fun! I practiced “Unexpected” with them for a little while, then I went downstairs. Dinner was barbecue pork sandwiches. Yum! After dinner we (my cousins and I) watched TV and got in our jammies. Then we had a jammie dance party. We do it every time we meet at Grammie and Grandad’s house. I always look forward to these meetings because they are so enjoyable. Yesterday was the best one yet!!

National Mythology Exam

In another post I said that I would tell you more later. Well, here is more detail on the Mythology Exam.
I believe I told you that I took two subtests. Each subtest is ten questions. You can take them besides the 30 questions required of any student, but they are only optional if you are in 3rd or 4th grade. Grades 5th to 12th have to take at least one. Well, I took 2. I took the “Odessey” subtest and the “Jason and the Golden Fleece” subtest. They were somewhat easy. This was probably because 5 people in our class had just done a skit on the Odessey, book 1, which was the only book which we were tested on. My teacher had been studying “Jason and the Goden Fleece” with the 5th graders because that was the subtest they had to take besides the 30 questions, and I had been overhearing. I don’t know my score yet. I will know in May. I hope I get a gold medal like last year! (That is what you get for getting the test perfect.)
National Latin Exam
March 13, 2009 at 10:45 am | In school | Leave a CommentTags: exams
Around mid-March my school takes a National Latin Exam. Grades 3rd through 12th take it. It has 40 questions. Last year I took the very first level – the Exploratory Latin Exam. This year since I was one of the first in myclass to move into a Latin book, instead of learning vocabulary from my teacher in the ‘07 – ‘08 school year (3rd grade) which I did in 2nd grade, I am in the higher level in my class for Latin. Our Latin class is split in 2 parts. I have been studying lots. Our history teacher has been giving us many sheets on Rome so we could be well prepared. Some questions were easy, some were hard. It was a very serious exam. Next year I will have to take some more material, I believe.
Another exam which I have not blogged about is the National Mythology exam. I have been taking this since in 3rd grade. It was very easy. There are 30 questions required of 3rd and 4th graders, and there is a certain number of subtests of 10 questions that 5th and up have to take. It is optional for the 3rd and 4th graders to take this. I took 2 subtests. I will tell you more about it later.
Potter County Trip

Every year, our school goes on a trip to Potter County. My science teacher has a cabin up there. The students can opt to stay at school or go to Potter County. If you are under 6th grade you must go with a parent. This year my dad is going along. I am very excited!! Plus, lots of my friends are going too. We will go maple sugaring. My friends who have gone before tell me that they also play Laser Tag and other games. It will be fun. We will still have to do homework but there will not be any actual school. There is a designated time for homework. I will not be blogging then but I will type in a blogpost as soon as I get back.
Correction on “Scottish Dancing Competition”
March 12, 2009 at 11:55 pm | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentI just have 1 little correction to make. Out of the 4 dances I’ve mentioned, Maggie and Jacqui only did 1, which was the Fling. They will do the Sword and possibly the Lilt in May.
