I have a (MUCH!!!) better version of Creative Communication to share with you. I hope you like it! Please tell me what you think in a comment on this post.
Fun at the Farm
My parents waved as they dropped us off at our grandparents’ farm before leaving for Cancun. I’d visited the farm before, but had never stayed for a whole week. I didn’t know what to expect. I pictured lugging buckets of feed to the cows and selling the wheat at a farmers’ market! Actually, my grandparents had sold the cows already, and they don’t sell wheat at farmers’ markets.
I had a lot to learn. Once my grandfather returned a combine, which helps harvest crops, to a neighbor, and he let us ride along. I stood up, since the seats were taken. That ride was frightening because we were up so high, but it was fun!
One hot Sunday, we got some yummy ice cream and watched the animals in the mini-zoo there. The bear was my favorite animal. Its size and beautiful black color were amazing.
At the farm, I learned that if you don’t have something, you make do with something else. Without Internet access, I read Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. I enjoyed it, especially because much of it took place on a plantation. To me, it related to my farm trip.
Although I had fun with my grandparents, I was excited to see my parents! They brought us presents from Cancun, like change purses and jewelry. The photos of the Chichen Itza ruins, the remains of ancient Mayan temples, looked interesting. But Cancun cannot beat my farm experience.

As I do every year, I have been working on an essay for Creative Communication. I believe it’s ready to share now. It is ready to be read…so now you can read it.
Fun at the Farm
Last summer, my parents went to Cancun, Mexico, for a week. They left my sisters and me at my grandparents’ farm. I’d visited before, but had never stayed for a week. At the farm, there are crops like corn and wheat. I didn’t know what I’d be doing to help out. I thought maybe I’d be cutting the wheat! I didn’t, but I learned a lot about farm life.
Once, my grandfather took us along when he returned a combine harvester to a neighbor. I stood up, since there weren’t any more seats. I loved the experience, though it was scary because we were up high.
One hot Sunday, we got some yummy ice cream. There was a mini-zoo with fascinating animals, and we watched them after we ate our ice cream. My favorite was the bear – though it was sleeping, its size and beautiful black color were amazing.
My farm trip was important to me. I learned that if you don’t have something, you make do with something else. Without Internet access, I read Uncle Tom’s Cabin. I enjoyed it, since some of it took place on a plantation. I had fun with my grandparents.
I was excited to see my parents! They brought us presents from Cancun, such as change purses and jewelry. We enjoyed my dad’s photographs. There were photos of the Chichen Itza ruins, the remains of ancient Mayan temples. I would like to see them someday.

Cricket essay

For English, I was assigned to write an essay for a Cricket Magazine contest (the same magazine that I wrote the bug poem for). Without further ado…here it is!
Calculator Girl
It was a typical Tuesday night for Marcy, with lots of math homework. She was perfectly fine with the amount of math that she had to do, because she had an unusual talent with her math homework. All she had to do was to send a message to her brain, and she knew the answer. She had to show her work, but she couldn’t help using her “calculator”, because she had to think about a problem to work it. Marcy didn’t think she was cheating. She tried not to, but it was impossible not to use her “head calculator” while doing a problem.
Once Marcy’s teacher noticed that she got every problem correct, he became suspicious. He believed she had used a calculator to get her answers, thinking that no student could do what she’d done. He called many parent-teacher conferences with Mrs. Johnson, Marcy’s mom. Mrs. Johnson stood up for her daughter, but the teacher never let up.
Finally, Marcy admitted her secret to her teacher. It was the hardest decision she had ever made. When she walked into school on Wednesday morning, she took a deep breath, went up to the teacher’s desk, and told her secret. He didn’t believe her – or so she thought.
Marcy came downstairs on Thursday to find her mother gaping at the morning paper. “What’s up, Mom?” she asked. Mrs. Johnson handed her the newspaper.
The article read:
“Mr. Ericson, a 5th grade teacher at the local school, reports that Marcy Johnson, one of his students, confessed that the reason she got every math problem correct was because she had ‘a calculator’ in her head! School officials are determining whether or not this will be considered cheating.”
Marcy was amazed. “How could he?!” she cried.
“What’s done is done. You’re going to have to go to school,” replied Mrs. Johnson, as Marcy headed out the door.
The issue blew over eventually. The school officials arrived at the conclusion that Marcy was not cheating. Mr. Erickson apologized for his behavior, and Marcy had a very good school year in 5th grade.

Yesterday I had a few friends over to have a “Tween Magazine Club” meeting and to start writing our magazine, Tween Magazine. We finished our first issue, with a short story, mazes, fashion tips, and more! All of the girls went to camp with me. It was great to see them again. We also took a walk around the neighborhood with my family’s dog, Ginger. (See “My Pets” for more on Ginger and our three hermit crabs.) Overall, I had a great time and can’t wait for our next meeting.

Do you know what Boggle is?
It is a fun word-finding game that my dad, Lena, and I play all the time after the little ones are in bed. Normally my dad creams us, but last night I won. I found 4 five-letter words in one round. (Five-letter words are worth 2 points instead of the regular 1 for 3-and-4-letter-words.) I was so excited! I won the round. The score was : Lena, 1; my dad, 24; and me, 29. This is the first time I have won a game against him!!

I just looked at all my posts. This blog is around 2 years old! I just can’t believe how much my writing and spelling has improved! Most of my early posts were very short and had other mistakes, but my posts now are much better (compared to my first 10 posts.) I can’t believe that I have kept up this blog for so long! And I am so grateful to everyone who visits and has visited this blog regularly for 2 YEARS! Thank you so, so much for visiting and commenting for all this time!
New chores/experiences/privileges

Finally!!!!:-)
A couple of days ago I was alone in the kitchen making brownies. Key word : alone. I was even handling the oven myself. Well this was the first time!!!! So after the brownies had baked and cooled, I tried one. It tasted pretty good! Some mornings, I make breakfast. My sisters don’t mind. After all, my breakfasts are mostly pancakes.
Then my mom told me that I could go on walks by myself if I took the dog with me. Yes it’s a chore, but I don’t mind. I am alone! Speaking of which, I gotta go walk her now.

The showcase game was fun.
As in every showcase game, there were supposed to be thunderstorms in the afternoon. Lucky us. Last year the game got called off then rescheduled because as soon as everyone got there, it began to rain. Rip-off! But this time, miraculously, the storm blew right past us. I heard many reports of bad thunderstorms in other places. The game got rained on, but it felt nice. The score was close. In the 4th inning, my friend Dina played first. She helped us get some of the outs in that inning. In the 6th inning, I pitched. I caught the ball for the last out. We lost, however. The score was 11-10.Dina says that “every other time we won! It was just that we wore white shirts this time, and every other time that we won we wore purple. I think the shirts are to blame. Everyone else said they wanted white shirts cause it would be hot and white does not attract as much heat as dark colors. I yelled purple! Oh well…” Well, it WAS supposed to feel like 99 degrees, Dina!
It was a lot more fun than the other games. Those times we creamed the other team. Now we got involved in this game. I had fun. After all, that’s the point-to have fun, right? Plus we did pretty good.
